Communication in Rescue Vehicles –

via CAN

The RETTmobil International, Europe’s leading trade fair for rescue and mobility, was once again the central meeting point for specialists and managers in the rescue sector this year, with exciting specialist presentations and impressive live demonstrations. Decision-makers, emergency services and developers – everyone who protects life comes together here.

Communication in rescue vehicles is ensured via the CAN-Bus. So, it was no coincidence that Holger Zeltwanger, Managing Director of the CAN in Automation (CiA) user organization, and Uwe Koppe, Head of Development at MicroControl and member of the technical board at CiA for many years, visited their customers at this trade show.

CAN Bus

The CAN (Controller Area Network) Bus is a technology developed by Bosch in the 1980s to enable communication between different control units in vehicles without having to rely on a central control unit.

Thus, a CAN bus system in a rescue vehicle increases the speed of data transmission and reduces the number of cables. These are just two of the many advantages of the CAN bus, which minimize risks and are indispensable in emergency operations.

  • The CANopen / CANopen FD Master protocol stack from MicroControl offers a wide range of configuration options and is the basis for controlling and monitoring complex CANopen networks.
  • The CANopen/CANopen FD Slave protocol stack is optimized for low resource requirements and is ideal for intelligent sensors and actuators.

The MicroControl Modular System

The modular structure of the MicroControl protocol stacks brings both price advantages and significant time savings as only the lowest driver layer, CANpie FD, needs to be replaced for a new project, the protocol stack itself can remain unchanged to suit the new task.
