CAN Bus on the Rail –

Safety Systems

Safety on the railway comprises manifold aspects and goes far beyond the tracks. For example, railway carriages must be equipped with advanced protection systems to identify line fires at an early stage and thus increase safety in rail transport.

This is where the CAN interface comes in: The CAN (Controller Area Network) Bus is a technology originally developed by Bosch for the automotive sector to enable communication between different distributed control units in vehicles without having to rely on a central control unit. It quickly spread beyond the automotive industry and is now used in many areas, and also in the railway sector.

MicroControl, internationally well-known for their innovative solutions in the acquisition of measurement data with CAN bus, has developed a heat detection board with CAN interface.

The heat detection board precisely monitors the current flow from 0 to 24 mA between the connected cables to ensure an immediate alarm in the event of a fire. An undetected damage to the insulation of cables may lead to a fire on the vehicle that can be life-threatening.

The heat detection board can also be easily integrated into existing safety solutions. It ensures reliable monitoring and quick response in the event of an emergency, which is essential for the protection of staff and passengers.
